Soda Stream Makes Me Happy

My kids and Hubby were kind enough to buy me a Soda Stream for Mother's Day. I had been looking at the Soda Stream since my decision to try to cut Pop or Soda out of my diet. Initially I switched to bottled carbonated water with a squeeze of lime juice, and although I loved the taste I did not love the amount of recycling or the price. Soda Stream seemed like it might be the answer.
Why my Soda Stream makes me happy:
  • I use the Soda Stream to make carbonated water, and it is easy and fast and indeed I love it.
  • The recycling of bottles has been reduced to nothing.
  • No space is needed to store bottles or cans of water or Soda. I make it as I need it.
  • To date we have tried 6 flavours: Country Time Lemonade, Cola, Ginger ale, Cherry Koolaid, Lemon-Lime, and Root beer. All the flavours have been very good.
  • No one asks if we have any Pop, they simply make it.
A Soda Stream starter kit and add-ons are not cheap, but I believe over time it will be at least as cheap if not cheaper than buying Pop, and there are other non monetary benefits I think are worth the investment.
  • Soda Stream was approximately $100.00
  • carbonating canisters approximately $35.00
  • 3 pack of bottles approximately $18.00 at Canadian Tire (Soda Stream starter kits comes with one bottle)
  • flavours approximately $7.00 each (Walmart has them for 2 for $10.00, $7.00 when bought as singles)
A Soda Stream definitely makes a perfect gift for a student going off to University, Mother's Day, or for Father's Day (aka: mancave beverage maker).  For those you know who have one already, a carbonation canister and selection of flavours would make a perfect hostess gift, stocking stuffers, or care package.

So there you go. I'm Cathy thinking out loud about Soda Stream.

Note: I have not been compensated in any way for this review.  It is completely my personal opinion.

  1. Hey Cathy! So great to read how the Soda Stream works and how it has helped you and the environment. I inadvertently won one in a contest last week and wasn't sure what I would do with it, but as a big pop drinker who is trying to cut down, this seems like a good alternative. Cool beans.

    1. Hi Suzanne, I really do love it. I love not having all the recycling or the space needed to store the cases of pop or water. My family likes the taste of the Cola and pop flavours which was a concern. So far we have been very happy. Be sure to buy flavours at Walmart 2 at a time for the savings, and I believe the canisters can be returned and trading in for a new one for $20 (similar to the propane tanks) at many of the stores that sell them. I need to look into to this since $35 is pricey. Each canister does about 35 litres of carbonation. Enjoy it and let me know what you think.

  2. Oh Cathy, now we have two things in common, I've just joined the world of SodaStream. I was blessed to be selected to host a SodaStream House Party and received the Sodastream machine and starter kit. Being a huge pop drinker, this was a dream come true. I love it for all of the reasons you mentioned and also, it helps me regulate the amount of sugar I intake. For me, a little syrup go a long way. The only "downfall" is the kit came with loads of diet flavors. I detest diet soda...or anything labeled diet for that matter. Luckily the after-taste isn't as bad as in some diet sodas, still I'll be saving those for company. lol If you or anyone else that recently purchased a SodaStream machine is interested, I have some left over $20 rebate forms from the House Party kit that I'd be happy to share. Just hit me up on Google+ (click on my name to go to my page). =D

    1. Lucky you! I use it for carbonated water and add lime slices! Great in this hot weather. Are the rebate coupons only good for US or OK for Canada too?

    1. I really am loving it and chatting with my sister about getting one for my neice who is heading off to University in September. Great grad gift. Don't need to plug in, can use tap water, small and no cases of beverage need to be store in small residence rooms.

  4. The main reason I would not buy a Soda Stream is we rarely drink pop here, pop has always been a special occasion thing.

    1. Catherine, I use it to make carbonated water daily. I drink a lot of that, and so does Hubby and my son. A bottle of Perrier is $1.50 and lots of bottles to recycle. I actually started drinking carbonated water instead of soda. So far working out well.

  5. LOOOOOVE my sodastream! I don't drink anything else carbonated but whatever we mix with our SS. Am in total love with Country Time Lemonade, and if you want something similar to Timmie's raspberry lemonade, mix the CT Lemonade with Sodastream's Cranberry-Raspberry and pour that soda mix over crushed ice! :) What did you think of the Cherry Koolaid? We tried the fruit punch and found it to be way too sweet.
